Google Launches ‘Storybook’ Feature in Gemini App, Turning Photos and Drawings into Personalized Nigerian Storybooks

Google has introduced a new feature called Storybook within its Gemini app, allowing users in Nigeria—and worldwide—to transform everyday photos, drawings, and ideas into customized, narrated storybooks. This innovative tool aims to foster creativity and enhance early education, especially in Nigeria, where storytelling is a cherished cultural tradition.

With Nigeria’s vibrant storytelling heritage and a youthful population—approximately 39 million children under six—Storybook offers a timely solution for engaging, educational content. Users can describe a story, upload images of their children, toys, or drawings, and the app generates a charming 10-page illustrated story complete with narration.

“Storytelling is at the heart of Nigerian culture,” said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications & Public Affairs Manager for West Africa. “Storybook feels like a natural extension of that tradition, giving parents and educators a new way to captivate children’s imaginations and make learning more interactive and personal.”

The feature serves as a creative partner, enabling families to craft stories about local culture, funny family moments, or personal experiences. For example, a parent can turn a photo of their child and favorite toy into a story, or a child’s drawing into a lively adventure. Each generated story includes custom illustrations and a narrated voice, making storytelling more engaging.

Kola-Ogunlade emphasized, “The real magic isn’t just the AI; it’s how it empowers people to express themselves. Whether explaining a job, reliving a holiday, or creating educational content, Storybook turns everyday moments into personalized stories that resonate.”
