How a Sickle Cell Survivor Became the ‘AI Wonder Woman’ Leading Africa’s Tech Charge

For Adeola Eka, these are not just motivational words; they are the hard-won philosophy of a woman who has spent her life defying the odds. Long before she was known as the “AI Wonder Woman” and a globally recognised tech strategist, Eka’s world was defined by the walls of hospital wards. Born with Sickle Cell Anaemia, her childhood was a cycle of excruciating pain, blood transfusions, and surgeries. At one point, doctors gave her little hope for a future, and at the age of 18, she was so consumed by despair that she nearly ended her life.
“At 18, I didn’t see anything good about my life,” Eka recalls of that pivotal moment when she chose to divert her pain into service. Today, she stands not as a victim, but as a mother of two daughters and a leader of a continental tech movement. Her professional journey is as resilient as her personal one; she began as a robotics teacher in 2017, evolved into an SEO specialist, and pivoted into Artificial Intelligence two years ago to fill what she saw as a critical gap in African innovation.
Eka’s mission with AI4Africa is deeply rooted in this sense of urgency. She believes Africa missed out on previous industrial revolutions and cannot afford to be a bystander in the age of AI. She describes the shift as moving from a “Korope bus” to a “Tesla,” urging Africans to jump on the automated “railroad” of the future.
A fierce advocate for women, Eka is particularly passionate about ensuring African women are leading innovation rather than being left behind. She demonstrates the practical power of AI in everyday life, such as using AI tools to design “smashing” fashion outfits, proving that technology is a tool for everyone, from tailors to CEOs.
“I don’t see what Africa lacks. I see what Africa carries,” Eka declares, pointing to the brilliance and creativity of the continent’s youth. By turning her own “excruciating pain” into a global purpose, the AI Wonder Woman is now dedicated to ensuring that every African child has the opportunity to change the world.
