Union Bank Reinforces Commitment to Customer Data Security with New Global Certification

Union Bank of Nigeria has attained certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1, the world’s leading benchmark for safeguarding payment card data. The certification became effective on 11 August 2026, marking a significant milestone in the bank’s commitment to digital security and customer protection.
PCI DSS establishes a comprehensive set of technical and operational requirements aimed at securing environments where payment card data is stored, processed, or transmitted. Achieving this certification affirms that Union Bank securely manages its customers’ credit and debit card information, bolstering defenses against data breaches and financial fraud while enhancing public and customer confidence in its digital banking services.
The certification process encompassed a wide scope of the bank’s operations, including network infrastructure, card issuance, ATM and POS transaction processing, reconciliation, settlement, chargeback management, dispute resolution, and retail banking activities. Union Bank was assessed and certified in the Service Provider category, reflecting its dedication to maintaining the highest security standards.
This achievement is the culmination of a rigorous, year-long engagement involving quarterly assessments and close collaboration with departmental, business, and functional leaders across the bank, in partnership with security firm Digital Encode. The final independent audit was conducted by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor (QSA).
Commenting on this achievement, Managing Director and CEO, Yetunde B. Oni, stated, “The security of our customers’ information is central to everything we do at Union Bank. This certification reaffirms that our payment systems and processes meet a rigorous global standard, and it reflects the discipline of colleagues across the Bank who work every day to keep customer data safe.”
This certification renewal ensures that Union Bank maintains uninterrupted PCI DSS compliance, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement for continuous adherence to security standards, without any gaps.
