ARCON Unveils Maiden Special Recognition Awards, Calls for Entries as Sectoral Bodies and Brands Back Initiative

By Azeez Disu
In a move set to redefine the relationship between regulation and creative commerce in Nigeria’s multi-billion naira marketing communications sector, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has unveiled its maiden ARCON Special Recognition Awards (ASRA).
The landmark initiative, designed to pivot the regulator’s role from purely punitive enforcement to active industry development, was launched at a high-powered media briefing in Lagos, drawing together the country’s foremost marketing leaders, sectoral presidents, and corporate heavyweights.
Historically, letters from regulatory authorities in Nigeria have been met with an immediate sense of trepidation. However, ARCON’s Director-General, Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, made it clear during his welcome address that the council is determined to rewrite this narrative.
“We need to change the narrative as a regulator,” Fadolapo asserted. “We are not regulating to strangulate. We are regulating to develop and grow the industry.”
Recognising that the council has focused heavily on sanctions in the past, Fadolapo explained that the ASRA platform was born out of a desire to motivate and reward ethical compliance and professional excellence.
“When you have good, you need to motivate; when you have bad, you need to sanction,” Fadolapo noted, explaining that detailed research into existing industry awards revealed a critical gap between creative craftsmanship and corporate performance. “The award was created to be more of a bridge between skills development and corporate performance.”
A Blueprint Built on Rigour and Integrity
The awards, which will culminate in a grand ceremony on Friday, 23 October 2026, at the Bamoral Convention Centre in Lagos, are structured around four distinct pillars: Advertising Compliance, Public Sector Recognition, Private Sector Recognition, and Individual Recognition.
To ensure the highest standards of transparency and avoid any perception of regulatory bias, the planning committee has partnered with independent audit firm SIAO Partners SIAO Partners. Yinka Adebayo, Chairman of the ASRA Planning Committee, presented the framework, highlighting that the Advertising Compliance category will feature 16 subsectors, spanning fintech, banking, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and telecommunications.
Winners in the compliance category will be determined through an objective, data-backed scoring system. Shortlisted nominees will be selected based on the volume of advertising materials submitted to ARCON in 2024 and 2025. Independent auditors will then calculate a weighted compliance score, rewarding volume and adherence to standards. Both the client brands and their respective creative agencies will be celebrated jointly.
“Nobody is going to keep quiet for you to be heard,” Adebayo remarked, emphasizing the need for creative standards. “This shows clearly that all of these things are things that the auditors are going to help us to verify to confirm the genuity.”
Beyond compliance, the awards aim to preserve the history of Nigerian advertising by honouring pioneers through Sectoral Frontrunner and Lifetime Contribution Awards.
“This award is going to be more like a bragging right for the awardees and the recipients because it is going to come with stature, passion, and standing,” Fadolapo remarked. He added that the platform will serve to archive the rich history of the profession, charting its migration from “ground zero” in 1928 to the specialised, unbundled, highly sophisticated divisions seen today.
Sectoral Bodies Declare Solid Support
The initiative has received unanimous, enthusiastic backing from Nigeria’s major marketing communications sectoral bodies, whose presidents delivered powerful goodwill messages during the Lagos briefing.
Lanre Adisa, President of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), commended the regulator’s collaborative approach.
“We can’t overemphasise the need for recognition in an industry like ours,” Adisa said. “One of the things that we always strive for is to create visibility for the industry. One good way of doing that is that we recognize what we have going for ourselves and celebrate that—then the world can see what we are doing.”
Tolulope Medebem, President of the Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria (EXMAN), highlighted how recognition elevates professional benchmarks.
“For us at EXMAN, we believe that recognition is important in every industry because it does more than celebrate achievements,” Medebem noted. “What it does is reinforce standards, reward commitments, and remind us all of the values and behaviours we want to see more of across our profession.”
Adding her voice, Brenda Nwagwu, President of the Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN), stated:
“Recognition matters because it encourages excellence. It inspires professionalism and reminds us of the responsibility we carry as practitioners to continually raise the standards of our industry.”
Babs Fagade, representing the Out-of-Home Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN), added that rewarding top-tier execution will act as a “catalyst for more outstanding productions, deliverables, and executions within the industry.”
Corporate Backing and Sponsorship
The private sector has also rallied strongly behind the initiative. Conglomerate giant Tolaram Group has stepped forward as the official Platinum Sponsor.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Adeola Amosun, Group Media Manager at Tolaram Group, expressed pride in supporting an event that aligns with their corporate values of integrity and excellence.
“We believe that the growth of the industry is not only driven by great brands and great ideas, but also by professionalism, integrity, excellence, and commitment to doing things the right way,” Amosun stated. “We see this initiative as more than just an award ceremony. It is an opportunity to celebrate individuals, agencies, media organisations, and stakeholders whose contributions continue to raise the standard of Nigeria’s marketing communications industry.”
