Agbo Francis Defends 2026 Cycling Lagos Title as Sanwo-Olu’s Aide Flags Off Event
In a vibrant showcase of community spirit and sport, Lagos State marked a significant milestone with the 5th edition of Cycling Lagos, an event that has become a cornerstone of the city’s health and youth engagement initiatives. On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Grassroots Sports Development, Mr. Adebanji Adeoye Atewogboye, officially flagged off the race at the National Stadium, Surulere, as cycling star Agbo Francis claimed his second consecutive victory.
The event kicked off with a lively 3.6-kilometre fun ride, setting the tone for a day dedicated to fitness, community bonding, and sustainable living. “Today, we are not just riding bicycles. We are riding for health, for unity, and for the future of sports in Lagos,” said Atewogboye, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to promoting active lifestyles and youth participation through innovative initiatives aligned with the THEMES+ Agenda.
The event’s spotlight was on Agbo Francis of Lagos State, who defended his title in the approximately 80.31-kilometre race that took participants along the scenic Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road before returning to the National Stadium. “Celebrating the fifth anniversary of the Cycling Lagos event is a great milestone, which could only have been achieved through the commitment of the government, its agencies, brand sponsors, cyclists and other stakeholders. We are very proud of how far we have come. This is just the beginning,” expressed Bamidele Adeleye, President/CEO of Cycling Africa Limited.
The event also featured exciting competitions among young cyclists, with categories for Under-15 and Under-10 participants, showcasing Lagos’s emerging talent and fostering youth engagement. The event attracted a diverse mix of professional cyclists, corporate organizations, children, cycling enthusiasts, and residents, reinforcing cycling as a powerful platform for health, social impact, and environmental sustainability.
Adding a layer of environmental consciousness, the 2026 edition launched with a webinar titled “Trash to Treasure: Unlocking Recycling Capacity for a Sustainable Future,” bringing together industry leaders and stakeholders to explore innovative waste management solutions and promote Nigeria’s circular economy.
