Facebook Marketplace Marks 10 Years, with More Than 835,000 Monthly Listings in Nigeria

Electronics, Fashion and Home Items Lead Nigeria’s Facebook Marketplace Listings

Facebook Marketplace is marking its 10th anniversary, highlighting how Nigerians use the platform to find products, sell items and connect with buyers and sellers in their communities.

More than 835,000 listings are placed on Facebook Marketplace in Nigeria each month. Electronics account for more than 180,000 monthly listings, while home items and fashion each record more than 110,000. Home improvement products account for more than 40,000 listings a month.

The figures reflect the range of products available on the platform, offering buyers a variety of options and giving sellers the opportunity to reach people interested in their items.

Marketplace was created after people began buying and selling through Facebook Groups. It gave those activities a dedicated space, making it easier for users to find products and connect with potential buyers and sellers. Meta said that purpose remains central to the experience.

“People come to Facebook to connect over the things that matter to them, and buying and selling is part of that everyday activity. We built Marketplace because people were already trading in Facebook Groups, and we wanted to give that a dedicated home where it’s simpler to discover products and connect with buyers and sellers. And that’s the story of Facebook: we see what people are already doing, and then make it easier. As we celebrate 10 years, we’re recognising the people and communities who make Marketplace useful every day. We want buying and selling to feel as safe as it is easy, which is why safety tools are built in, and why we keep sharing the simple habits that help protect people. ,” said Oluwasola Obagbemi, Head of Communications, Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta.

Buyers can search for specific items, compare options and contact sellers with questions about products. Sellers can list items and connect with prospective buyers. The platform is used for a range of transactions, from furnishing a home to selling a second-hand gadget.

Meta also advised users to take precautions when buying and selling. Buyers should review seller profiles, other listings and available ratings before proceeding. For in-person exchanges, users are advised to meet in a public, well-lit place during daylight and tell someone they trust about their plans.

Where possible, buyers should inspect items before paying. They should also avoid payment links shared in chats and access payment services through official websites or apps. Users who encounter suspicious activity should stop the transaction and report the listing or person on Facebook.

As Facebook Marketplace marks its 10th anniversary, the platform continues to connect Nigerians looking for products with people selling items.
