MAN Reiterates Call for Nigerian-Made Fencing Amid Lagos Airport Renovation
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government to prioritize locally manufactured fencing materials for the ongoing Lagos Airport perimeter fencing project.
In a statement released by MAN’s Director General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, the organization commended the government for its efforts to uphold national infrastructure development but emphasized the importance of adhering to Nigeria’s “First Policy” in procurement.
Highlighting the recent procurement process for the Murtala Mohammed International Airport fencing, Ajayi-Kadir expressed concern that despite Nigeria’s capacity to produce high-quality fencing materials, the project’s fencing components are slated to be imported from South Africa. He stressed that such decisions undermine Nigeria’s efforts to promote local industry, create jobs, and conserve foreign exchange.
MAN advocates that Nigerian manufacturers, who possess the technical expertise and proven capacity to meet international standards, should be given priority in supplying the fencing materials, particularly Clear Vu fencing, for the project. Ajayi-Kadir pointed out that this approach aligns with Nigeria’s Executive Orders 003 and 005 and the Nigeria First Policy, recently reaffirmed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The organization emphasized that sourcing materials locally would bolster the industrial sector, generate employment for Nigerian youth and skilled workers, increase government revenue through taxes, and enhance national security through self-reliance. MAN also recounted past instances where imported fencing materials for similar projects hindered local industry growth, urging the government to avoid repeating such mistakes.
In conclusion, MAN called on the Federal Government to intervene swiftly to ensure that Nigerian manufacturers are given the opportunity to supply fencing materials for the Lagos Airport project, aligning procurement practices with national interests. The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting government policies aimed at inclusive economic growth and development.
