Momoh, Auwal, Abubakar, Others Win at Cycling Kano 2025
The ancient city of Kano was alive with energy on Saturday as cyclists and sports enthusiasts from across Nigeria gathered for Cycling Kano 2025, marking a historic milestone for competitive cycling in Northern Nigeria.
Isa Momoh, a professional cyclist from Kaduna State, secured the gold medal in the male professional category. His fellow Kaduna athlete, Jacob Ishaku, finished second to claim the silver medal, while Joel Berry, a talented cyclist from Abuja, earned the bronze following an impressive performance.
In the junior categories, athletes from Kano dominated the podium. Mubarak Auwal took gold in the Under-15 boys’ category, finishing ahead of Mujahid Hudu and Ibrahim Sani, who secured second and third places respectively.
Umar Tasiu Mohd also claimed gold in the Under-10 category, finishing ahead of Yusif Baffa and Haruna Abdullah, who received silver and bronze medals. Both young cyclists expressed optimism about returning stronger for the 2026 edition.
The girls’ categories showcased equally remarkable performances. In the Under-15 girls’ event, Islam Yau Abubakar claimed gold, while Hauwau Mohd Abdulhamid and Amina Abdulhamid secured silver and bronze medals respectively.
During the event, the Senior Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor on Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Sani Musa Danja, who led celebrities to flag off the race, credited the success of the competition to the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf. He also appreciated the efforts of the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, the event organisers, and all stakeholders for their dedication and relentless efforts.
Mr. Danja extended his gratitude to corporate partners and sponsors, including Union Bank, NNPC, Peak Yoghurt, Flour Mills of Nigeria, and other supporting brands, for their invaluable contributions.
Cycling Kano 2025 was attended by distinguished guests, including His Royal Highness, the Emir of Kano, Mallam Muhammadu Sunusi II, represented by the Barwan Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Bello. Also present was the Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abbas Danlami Abdullahi, from Nigeria Police Academy Wudil, Kano, among others.
Themed “Health and Wellness,” Cycling Kano 2025 is a state-supported initiative led by the Abba Kabir Yusuf administration in partnership with BrandEscort Communications. The programme aims to promote cycling as a competitive sport, encourage healthy living, foster youth empowerment, and advance environmentally sustainable transportation across Kano State.
