Seplat Energy Strengthens Educational Support with Three New STEAM Labs in Edo State
As part of its ongoing commitment to education development, the NEPL/Seplat Energy Joint Venture has inaugurated three advanced Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) laboratories in Benin City, Edo State.
The newly commissioned labs, handed over to the Edo State Ministry of Education on June 26, 2025, are situated at Niger College, Army Day Secondary School, and Oba Akenzua Secondary School. These additions complement the three existing STEAM labs previously established at Ihogbe College, New Era College, and Edo Boys High School, all within Benin City, further reinforcing the JV’s dedication to enhancing educational opportunities in its host communities.
Chioma Afe, Seplat Energy’s Director of External Affairs & Social Performance, expressed gratitude to Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo and the government for creating an environment conducive to impactful educational initiatives. “We are excited to partner with the Edo State Ministry of Education to deliver quality education. These STEAM labs are designed to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation among students, equipping them for the demands of the 21st century,” she stated.
Afe emphasized the importance of the STEAM approach, highlighting its interdisciplinary nature that encourages students to connect different subjects, fueling curiosity and creativity.
Representing Governor Okpebholo, Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu, praised Seplat Energy and NEPL for their swift and impactful investment in the future of Edo’s youth. He urged students and school officials to utilize and protect the new facilities diligently, describing the labs as a testament to the fruitful partnership between Seplat Energy and the state government. “Our goal is to ensure every Edo child has access to quality education, and these labs are a step toward that vision,” he affirmed.
Paul Omenogor, NEPL’s Deputy Manager of Sustainability, called on students, staff, and the community to maximize the use of the laboratories and safeguard the equipment, encouraging ongoing support for future investments.
Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Oil, and Gas, Andrew Ijegbai, commended the JV partners for their dedication to improving educational standards in Edo.
Principals from the beneficiary schools—Godwin Idemudia, Osemwenkhae Ezeilekhae, and Ipogah Michael—expressed their gratitude, describing the laboratories as transformative for both students and teachers. They pledged to ensure the facilities are well-maintained and effectively utilized.
Fitted with modern educational tools, including computers, internet access, and specialized learning materials, the STEAM Labs aim to revolutionize how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics are taught at the secondary level.
This initiative underscores Seplat Energy’s commitment to nurturing the next generation of innovators, scientists, engineers, and creative thinkers.
The event drew participation from education stakeholders, community leaders, school administrators, and representatives from the NEPL/Seplat Energy JV, all united in support of advancing educational development in Edo State.
