Manufacturers Laud FG on “Nigeria First” Policy, Call for Collaborative Implementation
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has expressed strong support for the Federal Government’s “Nigeria First” policy directive, which prioritizes the patronage of made-in-Nigeria goods and services and emphasizes local content development, including technical knowledge transfer.
Mr. Segun Ajayi-Kadir mni, Director General of MAN, hailed the initiative as a positive and much-needed step. He described it as “cheering news and long-awaited relief” for Nigerian manufacturers who have shown resilience and faith in the nation’s economic potential despite challenging conditions.
According to MAN, the policy demonstrates a clear commitment from the government to bolster local industries, stimulate economic growth, and create jobs. By favoring domestically produced goods and services, the government can drive demand, increase manufacturing capacity utilization, and attract investment into the sector.
MAN believes the “Nigeria First” policy will have significant positive ripple effects across the economy, leading to increased economic activity, improved GDP growth, and enhanced competitiveness for Nigerian industries. Citing an earlier survey, MAN highlighted that effective implementation of such an initiative, as outlined in a potential executive order, could potentially boost GDP by 56%, reduce unemployment by 37%, and significantly increase firms’ willingness to hire.
Ajayi-Kadir stressed the importance of support from all levels of government, private sector entities, and individuals in patronizing made-in-Nigeria goods and services. He specifically called on uniformed government agencies, the military, police, legislature, and the Presidency to lead by example. He emphasized that government contracts should prioritize the use of made-in-Nigeria materials and urged the government to consult with manufacturers to ensure effective and efficient implementation.
MAN views the directive as long overdue and believes that the government, as the largest consumer, setting a precedent will send positive signals and boost consumer confidence in Nigerian products.
As the leading body for manufacturers in Nigeria, MAN is eager to collaborate with federal, state, and local governments, their agencies, and private sector organizations to successfully implement the “Nigeria First” project.
“Mr. President has blown the whistle, let the race to realizing the full potentials of our economy begin,” stated Ajayi-Kadir. He urged a recommitment to leveraging Nigeria’s natural resources and actively consuming locally produced goods to expand production. This, he concluded, is essential for building a more prosperous, diversified, and inclusive economy that benefits all Nigerians.
