NIPR Celebrates Adeniyi’s Election as WCO Chair, Highlights Public Relations as a Leadership Tool

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has extended its congratulations to Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, on his historic election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO). The WCO, based in Brussels, Belgium, is the premier international body responsible for shaping global customs policies and standards.
Adeniyi, who previously served as Vice President of NIPR, was elected during the 145th/146th WCO Council Meeting held on June 28, 2025, in Brussels. He is the first Nigerian to attain this esteemed position, marking a significant milestone for the nation.
In a statement, NIPR President and Chairman of the Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku, praised Adeniyi’s achievement, emphasizing that his rise to the leadership of WCO underscores the vital role of public relations as a key leadership function. He noted that Adeniyi’s success reflects the power of strategic communication in elevating governance and organizational excellence.
Dr. Neliaku expressed pride in the way NIPR members in leadership roles continue to put Nigeria on the global map through effective public relations strategies that address organizational challenges.
He remarked, “Your election as Chairperson of WCO is a historic milestone for Nigeria, demonstrating that public relations is not just a communication tool but a strategic leadership function. This achievement showcases the importance of strategic communication in raising standards of leadership and governance worldwide.”
The NIPR leader expressed confidence that Adeniyi’s tenure will foster innovative reforms within the global customs community, particularly in enhancing the communication of WCO’s initiatives to the international audience.
It is noteworthy that Adeniyi was recently appointed Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Nigeria Reputation Management Group (NRMG), an initiative of NIPR, further underscoring his influence in strategic communication and reputation management.
