2027 Elections: ARCON Warns Politicians, Advertising Agencies Against Unapproved Political Advertisements
As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has issued a firm warning to politicians, political parties, and advertising agencies to exercise caution in their campaign communications. The regulatory body has emphasised that any unauthorised advertisements, especially those on traditional and online media platforms, are in breach of the Nigerian Code of Advertising and the ARCON Act.
In a statement dated June 16th, 2026, ARCON’s Director-General, Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, stated: “Kindly note that exposure of unapproved adverts on traditional and/or online media platforms without prior approval of the Advertising Standards Panel is an offence under section 34(3) of the ARCON Act.” He further stressed that all political parties, aspirants, and campaign organisations must cease and desist from exposing unauthorised advertisements without prior approval.
Dr Fadolapo also warned that ARCON, in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies, would commence nationwide enforcement exercises aimed at removing unauthorised political advertisements. He declared: “ARCON will further seek to prosecute any person or body corporate who sponsors, causes to be exposed, exposes or takes benefit of political advertising, advertisement or marketing communication without approval of the Advertising Standards Panel.”
The statement underlines the importance of compliance with Nigeria’s advertising laws and highlights the regulator’s commitment to ensuring that all political advertising during the election period is conducted within the legal framework. It also serves as a reminder that violations could lead to legal action, including prosecution.
The ARCON Director-General urged stakeholders to adhere strictly to the guidelines, adding that the enforcement exercise was necessary to ensure a level playing field and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
