MediaConsortium 4.0 Highlights the Urgency for Brands to Embrace the Age of the Empowered Consumer

Lagos recently hosted the fourth edition of the MediaConsortium Conference and Awards (MediaConsortium 4.0), a pivotal industry event bringing together marketing executives, media practitioners, corporate leaders, and brand custodians. Themed “The Value Shift: Strategies for the New Market Reality in the Age of the Empowered Consumer,” the gathering examined the ongoing structural realignment of market power from brands to consumers, offering strategic insights for navigating Africa’s complex economic environment.
The conference was inaugurated by Godwin Anyebe, Co-Publisher of MediaConsortium Magazine, who highlighted the profound transformation occurring across trade, communication, and brand strategy. “For decades, market power resided predominantly on the side of supply. Brands dictated narratives, set engagement terms, and controlled distribution channels,” he remarked. “Today information accessibility, digital connectivity, and heightened economic consciousness have flipped that historic model. Today’s consumer is informed, discerning, connected, and uncompromising. Navigating this new reality requires more than incremental adjustments—it demands bold, forward-looking strategies, deep cross-sector collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to customer-centric innovation.”
In his keynote, titled “The Day the Customer Took the Wheel: The Value Shift: What Happens When the Consumer No Longer Needs the Marketer to Make the Choice?”, Dr. Bolajoko Bayo-Ajayi, President of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN), represented by Oluwafemi Adeniba, underscored the collapse of traditional marketing control. “The rise of digital connectivity, fintech, e-commerce, the creator economy, and artificial intelligence has effectively dismantled traditional information asymmetry, transferring market power directly from brands to buyers,” he explained. “While companies retain control over their paid advertising, they no longer dictate the surrounding narrative or customer dialogue.”
Adeniba further noted that “treating consumers as merely ‘price-sensitive’ is a critical miscalculation; particularly in high-aspiration markets like Nigeria, buyers are inherently value-sensitive, constantly weighing the overall return against what they must give up under economic pressure.”
Yinka Femi Opadere, Head of Digital at Glo, complemented the discussion by emphasising the demise of one-way broadcast messaging. “To survive this shift, marketers must fundamentally alter their core orientation, pivoting from asking ‘What are we selling?’ to ‘What problem are you solving for me?’” he urged. “True commercial success now relies on delivering real, verifiable outcomes across every customer touchpoint, built on relevance, trust, seamless experience, and tangible results.”
The event featured an interactive panel moderated by Akonte Ekine, CEO of BrandXchange & Convener of the Consumers Value Awards. Industry leaders such as Olusesan Ogunyooye (Head of Marketing at AXA Mansard), Oke Umurhowho (Director of Marketing at StarTimes), Olabisi Shonibare (Director – Partnership, Grants Management and Innovations, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency), Victor Okafor (National Marketing Coordinator, Oriflame Cosmetics Limited), and Richard Salvador-Adebayo (MD, Digisplash Ltd) shared insights on maintaining consumer trust, evolving media consumption, and the importance of capturing and sustaining consumer attention in today’s attention economy.
Richard Salvador-Adebayo emphasised, “We are now in an attention economy, and brands must do everything to get the attention of the consumers and keep it. It is not just about impressions anymore.” He added, “All it takes is for one video to go viral, and it gets all the attention.”
The conference concluded with a rallying call for the marketing profession to adapt swiftly to the market’s pace. In an era where consumers now hold the microphone, the ultimate competitive advantage for brands is to create offerings that are genuinely worth choosing.
