Multigenerational Fandoms Meet in a Bold Play: The Marketing Strategy Behind McDonald’s SpongeBob x ONE PIECE Collaboration

In a masterclass of brand collaboration, McDonald’s has launched an innovative partnership that merges the worlds of SpongeBob SquarePants and ONE PIECE—a move that exemplifies strategic synergy in brand storytelling. This unexpected alliance, facilitated by the creative agency tms, underscores the power of cross-franchise collaboration to deepen consumer engagement and elevate the Happy Meal experience.
As the lead agency, tms played an instrumental role in transforming this partnership from concept to reality. Their responsibilities encompassed developing the visual identity, strategy, retail experience, digital gameplay, packaging, and toy design and sourcing—ensuring a cohesive and compelling consumer journey that resonates across multiple touchpoints.
The SpongeBob SquarePants x ONE PIECE Happy Meal is designed to ignite imagination through a treasure hunt adventure under the Golden Arches. While the two franchises have distinct audiences, tms tapped into their shared themes of adventure and exploration—pairing SpongeBob’s approachable, family-friendly appeal with the daring spirit of ONE PIECE to create a cross-generational connection.
The collection of collectible toys, crafted and sourced by tms, features characters from both franchises dressed in themed outfits, with a detachable ship component that encourages customization. This innovative approach transforms the traditional toy into an interactive, personalized experience that enhances brand engagement and playful discovery.
Inside McDonald’s outlets, tms developed a vibrant retail kit that immerses customers in the underwater adventure, utilizing character illustrations and bold artwork on dual-sided Happy Meal boxes. This visual storytelling reinforces the partnership’s narrative and elevates the overall brand experience.
Expanding the campaign beyond restaurant walls, tms also designed digital gameplay that invites families to participate in the treasure hunt virtually. Customers can scan a code on the toy or Happy Meal box to select a character and navigate a digital ship to collect virtual treasures—creating an engaging extension of the physical campaign.
Set to roll out in over 70 markets worldwide, this campaign exemplifies how strategic brand alliances can create immersive, multi-channel experiences that foster emotional connections and drive consumer loyalty.
Maria Liang, Manager of McDonald’s Global Family Marketing, emphasized the brand’s commitment to storytelling innovation: “McDonald’s has always been a place where fans can connect with the characters and stories they love in new and unexpected ways. This unlikely collab creates the ultimate adventure for fans alike, supported by a fully integrated retail experience complete with exclusive, dual-branded toys.”
Chantal Page, Senior Strategy Director at tms, added: “The partnership tms formed between SpongeBob SquarePants and ONE PIECE allows McDonald’s to tap into multigenerational fandoms and appeal to parents and kids in different ways. By finding shared truths between the distinct franchises, we created a Happy Meal that feels more like an immersive treasure hunt rather than a staple menu item.”
This campaign not only highlights creative excellence but also underscores how innovative brand storytelling can foster deeper emotional bonds, turning a simple meal into a memorable adventure for families around the globe
