Airtel Africa Plans Broader Rollout After Successful Starlink Mobile Testing in Kenya

Airtel Africa and SpaceX have announced a successful trial of data and messaging services using Starlink Mobile in Kenya. This milestone marks a significant step toward providing satellite-to-mobile connectivity to millions across Airtel Africa’s 14 markets.

The testing took place in “no connectivity” zones—areas where terrestrial mobile networks lacked signal. In these regions, Starlink Mobile was seamlessly activated, enabling 4G-compatible smartphones to connect to Starlink’s constellation of 650 satellites, ensuring users stayed connected.

During the trial, the connectivity supported light-data applications such as WhatsApp calling and messaging, maps, Facebook Messenger, and successful financial transactions via the Airtel app. Users in remote locations maintained access to these essential services, demonstrating the potential of satellite connectivity to bridge coverage gaps.

Sunil Taldar, Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa, stated: “We are thrilled to move from announcement to actionable steps with our partners at SpaceX. This testing phase in Kenya is a testament to our commitment to expanding global access. By integrating Starlink Mobile’s technology, we are ensuring that our customers remain connected even when they travel beyond our terrestrial network.”

Following this successful testing, Airtel Africa and Starlink Mobile plan to utilize the insights gained to expand the service across all 14 Airtel markets, subject to country-specific regulatory approvals. The partners also intend to introduce voice calling and enhanced data capabilities using Starlink Mobile V2 technology, which will enable broadband connectivity directly to mobile phones.
