AMVCA Announces Date For 2023 Awards, Unveils Head Judge
MultiChioce, the organisers of Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA), has announced that the 9th edition of its prestigious awards will hold from May 18-20, 2023.
The organisers also unveiled veteran film director, producer and writer, Femi Odugbemi as head judge of the award.
The three-day event will be a celebration of film production talents, culture, fashion, music and other elements of African entertainment.
The Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice Nigeria, Dr. Busola Tejumola said the three-day event will start with a cultural night to the runaway show and nominee gala. The main awards will be held on May 20, 2023. Prior to that the announcement of nominations would have taken place on April 9.
In her words, Tejumola said “The AMVCA has in the last 8 years become the unit by which excellence is measured and recognized and this 9th edition of the AMVCAs stands in a unique position being hosted in the 20th year of Africa Magic operations in Nigeria and at a point when cinematic output across Africa is entering a phase of global recognition and appreciation.
“This year, in partnership with Amstel and Zagg Energy Drink, we will be hosting a 3-day event that has begun with the call to entry which ended March 17, 2023. We have a 40 pervent increase in the number of entries compared to the last edition. Shortlisting has begun and we will move to the judging phases. The head judge for the 9th AMVCA is the veteran film director, producer and writer, Femi Odugbemi. The nominee announcement will be on April 9, 2023 at 7pm, across all Africa Magic channels, after which the voting portal will open.”
In his remarks, Odugbemi said: “From its very beginnings, the AMVCA has been a celebration of Africa, a celebration of our cultures, our heritage, our stories, our stars and the excellence of their talent. The work of our jury will be difficult as many of the shortlisted entries show technical excellence, great storytelling and enthralling performances. As usual there are categories of nominees as well where we invite you to vote for your favourite shows. Please support your choices with your vote.”
Recall, the last edition of the awards which were held at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos last year, saw Stan Nze and Osas Ighodaro emerge winners of Best Actor and Actress in a Drama respectively.
Other actors that went home with AMVCA awards in the last edition include Funke Akindele, who won Best Actress in a comedy, and Samuel Perry aka Broda Shaggi, who won for the male version of the same category.
Historical Drama, Amina, by Izu Ojukwu & Okey Ogunjiofor won the award for Best Overall Movie.
