Meta Enhances AI-Based Age Verification to Boost Teen Online Safety

Meta has announced significant advancements in its AI-powered age assurance measures, aimed at creating a safer online environment for young users. The company is leveraging a combination of artificial intelligence, improved product design, and parental support tools to better identify teens, enforce age restrictions, and assist families in managing digital experiences.

Meta’s latest developments include enhanced AI systems that scrutinise user profiles through contextual analysis of posts, comments, bios, and captions—looking for clues such as school references or age milestones. Additionally, new visual analysis technology estimates age based on broad features within photos and videos, without facial recognition, increasing detection accuracy when combined with behavioural signals. These measures are part of Meta’s ongoing efforts to uphold its minimum age policy of 13 and prevent underage access.

The company is also expanding verification processes, flagging accounts suspected of being underage and implementing stricter reporting tools to make it easier for users to alert Meta of potential violations. Human review teams are supported by AI models to ensure swift and consistent enforcement, while safeguards against circumvention are being strengthened to prevent users from bypassing restrictions by creating new accounts.

Meta continues to develop its Teen Account framework, automatically placing users under 18 in age-appropriate settings and content restrictions—efforts that have already benefited hundreds of millions of teens across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The technology that detects teens even when they enter an adult birthdate is being rolled out more broadly to ensure wider protection.

Supporting parents remains a priority, with new notifications and guidance to help them verify their children’s age and foster open communication about online safety. These tools complement Meta’s existing Family Centre resources, which provide educational materials to help families manage digital experiences effectively.

Meta advocates industry-wide solutions, emphasising that age assurance requires broader collaboration. The company supports integrating age verification at the operating system or app store level, aiming for consistent, privacy-conscious protections across platforms, reducing fragmentation and improving overall safety for young users.
