MTN Brings Data on Trial to Katsina, Engaging Students on Mobile Data Use

MTN Nigeria will bring its Data on Trial initiative to Katsina on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, extending its efforts to address customer concerns about data depletion and build understanding of mobile data consumption.
The event will take place at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma at 3:00 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to explore common questions about data usage and learn practical ways to manage their bundles.
The Katsina engagement follows earlier editions, including a public hearing in Lagos in June and campus events at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in August and Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, in October.
Hosted by lawyer and media personality Timi Agbaje, the session will use a courtroom-style format. Students from the Faculties of Law and Engineering will serve as the prosecution team, while MTN representatives will form the defence. The format is designed to encourage students to examine common concerns about data consumption and discuss the factors that affect usage directly with the MTN team.
Topics will include video-streaming quality, social media use, background app activity, automatic downloads and smartphone settings. Students will learn how higher-resolution video, autoplay and apps running in the background can use data, sometimes without their immediate awareness.
The discussion will also address concerns about bundles running out sooner than expected. This is particularly relevant to students who rely on mobile internet for research, online learning, communication and entertainment, and need to manage their data across these activities.
Participants will be introduced to tools such as the myMTN App and MTN’s Data Calculator to help monitor bundles, identify apps that use significant amounts of data and make informed choices about internet use. The session will also provide an opportunity to clarify questions about bundle validity, expiry and rollover, including the conditions that apply to eligible bundles.
For students managing academic responsibilities on limited budgets, a better understanding of data consumption can support more informed decisions about purchases and online activities.
Through the Katsina event, MTN aims to give students practical knowledge they can apply to their daily internet use and share with their peers. By bringing the discussion into campus communities, the company is continuing to promote informed conversations about mobile data and provide customers with a platform to raise questions and concerns.
