Sequoia Holdings Chairman to Be Installed as Balogun of Oyo on September 5

In a momentous event set for September 5, 2026, Dr. Adesola Kazeem Adeduntan, founder and Chairman of Sequoia Holdings Limited, will be installed as the Balogun of Oyo, a distinguished traditional title within the ancient Oyo Empire. This installation, officiated by His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, symbolizes a remarkable convergence of modern enterprise leadership and rich cultural heritage.
Originally scheduled for July, the ceremony was postponed following the tragic abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. While the victims have since been reunited with their families, and communities are recovering, preparations for this significant traditional event have resumed. The installation will take place at the Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, where guests have been requested to appear in wine and gold.
The Balogun title occupies a key position in the traditional hierarchy, historically associated with leadership, courage, integrity, and public service. Dr. Adeduntan succeeds the late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, a renowned mathematician, statesman, and former Governor of old Oyo State, who held the revered title with distinction.
His appointment introduces into the traditional institution a leader whose career spans banking, development finance, and institution building across Nigeria’s strategic sectors, including mining, professional services, education, healthcare, and philanthropy.
Born in Ibadan, Dr. Adeduntan earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Ibadan in 1992 before transitioning into finance. He further obtained an MBA from Cranfield University in the UK as a British Chevening Scholar, building an outstanding career with organizations such as Arthur Andersen, KPMG, Citibank, the Africa Finance Corporation, and FirstBank.
At the Africa Finance Corporation, where he served as pioneer Director, CFO, and Business Manager, he played a central role in establishing one of Africa’s leading development finance institutions. His leadership in securing an investment-grade A3 rating from Moody’s in 2014 was a pivotal milestone for AFC’s global capital market access.
Later, as Group Chief Financial Officer and then Group Managing Director and CEO of FirstBank, Dr. Adeduntan drove digital transformation, strengthened governance, and expanded operations across West Africa, Central Africa, and the UK—solidifying the bank’s position as a leading financial institution in Africa.
Retiring in April 2024, he embarked on a new chapter, building enduring institutions that contribute to Nigeria’s economic development. He is now the Founder and Chairman of Sequoia Holdings Limited, overseeing a diverse portfolio spanning minerals, energy, professional services, and investment platforms. His conviction: Africa’s future competitiveness hinges on the strength of its institutions, not just capital.
Within Sequoia, Sequoia Minerals & Metals Limited has become one of Nigeria’s most ambitious private mineral companies, focusing on critical, precious, and industrial minerals with a long-term strategy aligned with the global energy transition. The company emphasizes international standards of technical excellence, governance, and environmental stewardship.
Dr. Adeduntan also founded Sequoia Professional Services Limited, advising boards, governments, and investors on governance, strategy, and institutional transformation, supporting organizations in building resilient, sustainable institutions.
Beyond business, he channels his resources into philanthropy via the Adesola Adeduntan Foundation, which focuses on expanding healthcare and education access. Notably, the Foundation is constructing modern primary healthcare centers within the Olubadan of Ibadanland Palace Complex and the Palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, exemplifying how private philanthropy can enhance primary healthcare.
His public service contributions include his role as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, where he guides governance and industry partnerships to elevate Nigeria’s technological and innovative education landscape.
Recognized globally for his contributions, Dr. Adeduntan has received honorary Doctor of Science degrees from Cranfield University and the University of Ibadan. He is a Fellow of ICAN and CIBN and has completed executive leadership programs at Harvard Business School, Oxford, Cambridge, Wharton, and other top institutions.
The conferment of the Balogun title complements his existing traditional titles, further cementing his ties to Yorubaland’s historic cities. For many, this recognition reflects a lifetime dedicated to building institutions, developing people, and advancing national progress through principled leadership.
On September 5, the Palace of the Alaafin will welcome one of Oyo’s most accomplished sons, not just to celebrate a distinguished career, but to entrust him with an office whose enduring purpose is leadership in service of the Oyo Kingdom and its people. For Dr. Adeduntan, it marks the beginning of a new chapter—uniting modern institutional excellence with the timeless values and rich heritage of the ancient Oyo Empire.
