Spotify Launches Audiobooks in Nigeria

Spotify has begun rolling out audiobooks to listeners in Nigeria, expanding its audiobook service from 22 markets to more than 180 by the end of 2026. The move will make audiobooks available to more than 750 million people worldwide to stream or purchase on the platform.

In Nigeria, Spotify Free and Premium users can add Audiobooks+ for ₦2,300 per month. The add-on includes 15 hours of audiobook listening per billing cycle. Only time spent listening counts, and unused hours reset each cycle. Listeners can also purchase a 10-hour top-up for ₦2,700 or buy individual titles to keep.

The service is designed to fit into everyday routines, from commutes to evenings at home.

“Books change how we see the world, and the people in it. For a lot of people, audiobooks are how they find their way back to reading, on the commute, on a walk, or at the end of a long day. Bringing audiobooks to more than 180 markets means millions more people can discover that, and authors and publishers can reach readers they’ve never been able to reach before,” said Owen Smith, VP of Audiobooks, Spotify.

Features for listeners

Spotify’s audiobook experience includes Page Match, which lets listeners scan a book’s ISBN barcode and use page numbers to find their place in the audio version. It supports more than 30 languages and can help users move between print, ebooks and audiobooks.

The app also has a dedicated Audiobooks space for browsing and recommendations based on listeners’ interests across music, podcasts and books. Listening progress syncs across more than 2,000 supported devices, while other features include a Sleep Timer and offline downloads.

A platform for Nigerian authors

Spotify says its audiobook partnerships are non-exclusive. Through Spotify for Authors, local publishers and self-published authors in Nigeria can upload audiobooks and reach listeners in more than 180 markets, as well as access insights into their audiences.

The company said the Nigerian catalogue will grow as new partners join and local authors upload their work.

Audiobooks’ growth on Spotify

Spotify introduced audiobooks to Premium three years ago, aiming to build a platform for book lovers, authors and publishers. Over the past year, monthly audiobook listeners grew nearly 40%, while listening hours increased by more than 30%.

Since launching just over a year ago, Audiobooks+ has grown to more than one million subscribers.

How to get started

Listeners can update to the latest version of the Spotify app, open the Audiobooks hub or search for a title, then choose a book and add Audiobooks+. Plans can be managed at spotify.com/account.

Pricing and access models vary by market.
