Beyond Curtains and Costumes: TheatreMania Africa Set to Harness the “Soft Power” of the Arts for Global Peace on World Theatre Day
As the world prepares to commemorate World Theatre Day 2026, TheatreMania Africa Festival (TAF) is shifting the spotlight from mere entertainment to the urgent necessity of global diplomacy.
TAF has officially announced its annual landmark international webinar, themed “Theatre and the Culture of Peace: Building Bridges, Not Borders,” scheduled for Friday, March 27, 2026, at 2:00 PM (GMT+1).
In an era where geopolitical tensions and “warmonger voices” frequently dominate the airwaves, this webinar serves as a strategic intervention. It aims to re-establish the stage as a neutral ground where dialogue triumphs over division and where the performing arts act as a catalyst for socio-political healing.
The 2026 theme acknowledges that while borders may define nations, they should not confine the human spirit. Through this session, TAF seeks to demonstrate how the “wooden boards” of the theatre provide a sturdier foundation for peace than many political treaties. It further buttress the fact that there is need for a new Script for Global Harmony.
Reflecting on the transformative power of this initiative, Alayande Stephen T., CEO and Co-Founder of TheatreMania Africa Festival, noted: “We are at a crossroads where the world needs more than just speeches; it needs the visceral, empathetic connection that only the theatre provides. At TAF, we believe the stage is the original ‘social media’—a place where we don’t just see a story, we feel the heartbeat of our neighbor. By hosting this webinar, we are asserting that the arts are not a luxury of peace, but a prerequisite for it. We are building a platform where the only thing we ‘break’ is the cycle of misunderstanding” he submitted humbly.
The webinar will feature a diverse array of global voices, each bringing a unique cultural perspective to the discourse on peace-building:

These panelists will engage in a cross-continental dialogue, exploring how dance, drama, and poetry can be “weaponized” for positive social change and utilized as a form of “soft power” to mediate international tensions.
This webinar is an annual project for the build up for the TAF event later in the year, its mission to reposition African theatre within the global creative economy. By uniting the African diaspora with home-grown talent, the festival is creating a borderless ecosystem for artistic excellence. Indeed, this is a step in redefining the African Narrative.
