The Nigerian integrated marketing communications (IMC) ecosystem is reeling from the devastating loss of Mr. John Ajayi, the Founder, Publisher, and Chief Executive Officer of Marketing Edge, who passed away on Wednesday, 10th December, 2025. Mr. Ajayi was widely known as a visionary media leader and trailblazer whose work defined and elevated brand journalism in Nigeria.

Condolences have poured in from major industry bodies, including the Brand Journalists Association of Nigeria (BJAN), Dentsu Nigeria, and Rotary International District 9111.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Brand Journalists Association of Nigeria (BJAN) Chairman, Daniel Obi, commiserated with Marketing Edge over the passing, describing Mr. Ajayi’s death as a devastating loss not only to the media landscape but to the entire IMC ecosystem.

Obi paid tribute to the late publisher’s drive and spirit, saying: “We lost a gem both in the media industry and entrepreneurship. Mr. Ajayi was focused and ready to explore new opportunities,”. He further noted that the late Mr. Ajayi was not only part of the pioneers of Brand journalism in Nigeria but also a mentor and employer of labour. Obi concluded by offering prayers: “The media industry will surely miss him. We pray that the Good God gives his family the fortitude and grace to bear this monumental loss,”.

Dentsu Nigeria also issued a statement commiserating with the management and staff of Marketing Edge, noting that Mr. Ajayi’s passing was a huge loss to the Nigerian advertising and marketing industry. The group described the late publisher as a true friend, ally, and leader passionate about the development of the marketing communications industry, leaving behind a legacy of unmatched impact and service. He was cited as an instrumental pillar for the nation’s media and IMC sector.

The Group Executive Chairman & CEO of Media-Fuse Dentsu Nigeria, Emeka Chris Okeke, offered a personal tribute, celebrating the publisher as a man of honour and integrity whose career was dedicated to celebrating industry professionals, elevating industry standards, promoting excellence, and innovation. Okeke reflected on Mr. Ajayi’s character and impact, noting: “He was a very calm man; he was disciplined and demonstrated true commitment to professional standards. Mr. Ajayi was a very calm and kind-hearted man. His demise has left a big vacuum in the industry. We will truly miss him,”.

The passing of Mr. Ajayi came as a shock to Rotary International District 9111, whose District Governor, Rtn Prince Henry Akinyele, recalled that the publisher was scheduled as the theme speaker just the previous Wednesday, 3rd December, 2025, during the Rotary District 9111 Public Image Seminar.

DG Akinyele described the deceased as a close neighbour and Chairman of the Journalists Estate in Arepo, Ogun State, and “ highly cerebral and a consumate Publisher of the most informative, educative magazine on Nigeria’s marketing communication, whose sudden transition has left a void for the industry,”. The Governor prayed that Almighty God would give his wife and family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of an icon and friend of Rotary.

Rtn Olalekan Otun, Chairman of the Public Image Committee for Rotary District 9111, shared the message Mr. Ajayi sent regarding his inability to attend the seminar due to health issues: “Kindly help tender my profuse apologies to the Rotary District Governor, Rotarian Henry Akinyele,one of my highly esteemed junior brothers and neighbour in Journalists Estate Phase 1,Arepo,”. The message further explained: “Kindly tell him that I have long packaged the theme paper but yet to give to my graphic artist when I had some health issues. Tell them (Rotarians) that I had looked forward to honouring the Governor and his dynamic team. Only for my Doctor to advise I should go on bed rest for 4 Days. Hence,I am sending my Deputy – Editor – Chief ,Mr Ralph Tathagatga to do the presentation. Looking forward to another auspicious occasion,”.

Through Marketing Edge, Mr. Ajayi built one of Nigeria’s most respected platforms for marketing intelligence, industry reportage, and sectoral thought leadership.
