An ancient Nigerian proverb reminds us that “when the music changes, the dance must change.” In the fast-moving, high-stakes arena of African media and brand marketing, remaining static while consumer habits shift is a guaranteed path to friction. Facing macroeconomic pressures, evolving viewing habits across smart screens, and a fiercely competitive entertainment ecosystem, MultiChoice Nigeria, a CANAL+ company, has chosen to change its rhythm in a decisive, strategic fashion.

At an exclusive press briefing hosted at the MultiChoice Headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos, corporate leadership unveiled what represents the organisation’s most significant product update and brand portfolio overhaul in years. Live from 5 November 2026, MultiChoice is retiring its legacy package line-up in Nigeria, introducing a streamlined, four-tiered product architecture across both DStv and GOtv platforms.

This transformation is far more than a routine pricing update or cosmetic rebrand. Backed by CANAL+’s Global Offer Strategy, the initiative is designed to re-energise the subscriber base, eliminate choice paralysis, democratise premium sports content, and align offering structures with how contemporary African households consume media.

Decoding the New Architecture: Four Siblings with Distinct Brand Personalities

To communicate the restructured product suite to subscribers, media partners, and brand marketers, MultiChoice executives deployed a culturally resonant brand narrative during the Lagos unveil: conceptualising the new portfolio as four distinct “siblings” within a single household, each carrying a unique personality tailored to specific consumer segments and viewing behaviours.

Rather than navigating a crowded and confusing maze of historic tiers, Nigerian consumers will now select from four transparent, purpose-built packages across DStv:

On the GOtv platform, a mirror architecture delivers targeted accessibility through four corresponding tiers: Easy, Starter, Select, and Sports, ensuring that low-income and mid-market households receive elevated value without technical friction.

Scale, Simplicity, and Survival

Addressing journalists, Kemi Omotosho, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, a CANAL+ company, framed the package restructure as an operational necessity driven by three macroeconomic and structural shifts: Global Scale & Canal + Merger (Pan-African reach meets global content), Consumer shift & Multi-screen access (Satellite, OTT, Mobile & Smart TV), and Business Evolution & simplicity focus (“Evolve or die” / 4-Tier Structure).

Reflecting on the scale unlocked by the union with CANAL+, Omotosho emphasised the global strength backing the Nigerian market:

“We are very proud to be part of the CANAL+ group. Before, we were a Pan-African company; now we are global. That brings immense benefits from scale—from a content perspective, a technology perspective, and a people perspective through best practice exchanges. It is two powerful platforms coming together.”

Omotosho did not shy away from confronting brand perceptions and the realities of market stagnation:

“We do know the facts on the table. The fact on the table is we haven’t launched new products in a long time. Some people might perceive us as a big scale company where there’s no creativity, that we don’t care, just passing price increases. What we’re here to tell you today is that we have overhauled the entire strategy of the business, and today is just one piece of that evolution.”

Addressing changing viewing habits across smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones, Omotosho outlined MultiChoice’s technology-agnostic direction:

“The way we watch television has changed. Customers are consuming content across multiple platforms, technology agnostic—whether from streaming, satellite, or terrestrial. The ultimate truth is that we can’t keep quiet; we can’t do nothing, otherwise we will die. We need to evolve with our customers. We had too many packs, so we are solving for three things: simplicity, better value for money, and customer choice.”

“Our focus is on giving subscribers better value and access to the entertainment they love. The strength of our platform is the combination of African entertainment, leading international content, and unrivalled live sports in one place. We’ve reimagined our packages to better reflect how customers watch today.”

Describing the strategic brand segmentation, Tope Oshunkeye, Senior VP, Communications, MultiChoice Nigeria illustrated the personality profile of each package tier:

“When you have a child and announce it to the world, the first thing you want to see is what that child looks like. DStv is announcing four new siblings. Premium is the king, the first child that’s got the full experience: Formula 1, MotoGP, Grand Slam tennis, and global sports. Sports is like that second sibling that came five years ahead of its time, packing every UEFA Champions League and Premier League match. Select is the grounded, homegrown sibling with big local flavour. And Starter is that young, well-endowed sibling packed with variety that you want to invite into your home at every opportunity.”

Brand & Marketing Insights: Value Engineering and Portfolio Refreshment

From a brand management perspective, MultiChoice’s rollout represents a masterclass in value engineering, the practice of repositioning product features to deliver higher perceived utility at accessible price points.

Another Nigerian proverb cautions that “a single finger cannot lift a heavy load.” To lighten the financial load on inflation-weary Nigerian households, MultiChoice restructured its premium sports tiers. Historically, access to complete Premier League and UEFA Champions League broadcasts required upper-tier subscriptions costing around N30,000 monthly. Under the new structure, the dedicated Sports package delivers every live Premier League and Champions League match alongside WWE and UFC for N21,000, effectively lowering the barrier to entry for football-loving households.

Strategic Channel & Brand Enhancements

At the heart of this brand refresh is the introduction of SuperSport KICKOFF, a consolidated, high-impact channel accessible from the N6,000 Starter tier upwards that broadcasts the Premier League Match of the Week alongside selected UEFA Champions League fixtures. Alongside this sporting upgrade, the broadcaster has transformed the former Africa Magic Family brand into Africa Magic+, creating a vibrant general entertainment hub that seamlessly combines local drama, international series, music, and kids’ programming.

To further elevate the cinema experience for Nigerian households, MultiChoice has replaced its previously fragmented movie channels with a carefully curated portfolio comprising M-Net Movies+, M-Net Stars, and M-Net Legends, effectively bringing Hollywood releases closer to theatrical windows with significantly fewer repeats.

Complementing these content enhancements is a drive towards hardware-free accessibility, allowing customers to bypass physical decoders entirely by subscribing to the standalone DStv Stream app starting at N6,000 monthly, while existing satellite subscribers receive complimentary streaming access. For viewers opting for a traditional broadcast setup, a complete hardware promotional kit featuring a decoder, dish, and a one-month subscription is strategically positioned at N15,000.

Strategic Takeaways for Brand Marketers

MultiChoice Nigeria’s portfolio restructuring offers crucial strategic insights for brand directors and media planners operating across emerging markets. First and foremost, portfolio simplification defeats decision fatigue, demonstrating how consolidating previously cluttered product lines into four clearly defined tiers can effectively increase conversion rates and clarify core brand value. This approach is further strengthened by culturally grounded brand storytelling, where translating abstract, technical tiers into relatable ‘siblings’ humanises a complex product portfolio and builds deeper emotional resonance with local consumers.

At the same time, the strategy illustrates how price elasticity meets value engineering, showing that lowering entry thresholds for high-demand content, such as offering complete Premier League football coverage on the N21,000 Sports tier, can drive subscription volume and bolster retention in price-sensitive environments. Finally, the establishment of hardware-agnostic ecosystems by pairing traditional physical decoders with mobile streaming applications ensures comprehensive market coverage, seamlessly catering to both established households and digital-first youth demographics.

As another Nigerian proverb reminds us, “no matter how long the night, the day will break.” By confronting market realities head-on, streamlining its brand portfolio, and leveraging CANAL+’s global scale, MultiChoice Nigeria has positioned its brand to lead Sub-Saharan Africa’s media industry into an era of growth, accessibility, and customer-centric innovation.
