World Metrology Day: SON Reinforces Commitment to Accurate Measurement Systems to Boost Industry
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reaffirmed its dedication to leveraging precise and dependable measurement systems to foster Nigeria’s economic and industrial advancement.
Speaking at a press conference to mark World Metrology Day 2026, SON’s Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, emphasised the vital role of measurement standards in driving industrial development, safeguarding consumers, ensuring fair trade, and encouraging innovation.
Dr. Okeke explained that metrology—the science of measurement—serves as the foundation for confidence in products, services, market transactions, and public policy. He highlighted that accurate measurements assist industries in meeting the required standards, enhancing product quality, reducing trade disputes, and bolstering consumer trust.
He announced that industry leaders, policymakers, innovators, small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) operators, and business owners will convene at the C Event Centre in Abuja on 20 May to discuss measurement strategies aimed at boosting Nigeria’s economic development.
“The event aims to gather key stakeholders to better their businesses,” Dr. Okeke stated. He also noted that precise and traceable measurements are crucial for Nigeria’s competitiveness, as they enable local products and services to meet both domestic and international standards.
Furthermore, the Director-General stated that SON is strengthening its measurement infrastructure and collaborating with relevant national and international bodies to promote fairness, transparency, and confidence across vital sectors of the economy.
World Metrology Day, observed globally each year on 20 May, highlights the importance of measurement science in daily life, industry, trade, governance, and sustainable development. The theme for 2026, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making,” underscores the significance of reliable measurement in evidence-based decision-making.
Dr. Okeke affirmed that SON will continue to support industries, regulators, consumers, and policymakers by providing measurement standards that promote quality, safety, and sustainable economic growth.
